Indie Rock Music Revolution
Indie rock is a genre of music that soothes the souls of millions of people. It is a very diverse genre that encompasses many sub-genres and is usually defined as a branch of indie music, which basically means ‘independent’ music. The independent value is granted by the artists who make it, who choose to do everything by themselves or work with small low-budget labels, having total artistic freedom over their sound.
Indie rock artists and bands have signed with major label companies, especially due to the internet, but manage to keep their independent quality by producing their music in the same style and way as before, not compromising art for money. Fans greatly appreciate the outsider or underground vibe coming from these artists who have kept the integrity of their sound.
Alternative rock is the main genre where indie belongs and has very different sounds depending on the band or singer. Everything from lo-fi, to dream pop, to noise rock and emo can be indie rock, as this type of music is often taken for alternative rock.
The history of indie rock begins in the 1980s with the first records labels. The music of the indie scene was influenced by college radio, which included artist like R.E.M and The Smiths, which inspired guitar players. Music evolved into more abrasive and distortion-heavy sounds, with electric guitars and loud drums, as many new indie rock bands and artists began to appear, each experimenting with their own style and enriching the sound even more.
The 90s brought popular bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam, all under the alternative rock genre. Other styles were those of Green Day and The Offspring, as well as Blur and Oasis, from the Britpop scene. Alternative rock began to be used interchangeably with indie rock include more elements and the style split into sub-genres by the turn of the millennium.
